Notes - NOTES: For quite some time I had John married to Sarah Milligan as the son of John Flack and Mary McMurry, but there was always something 'not quite right' about the linkage.
Virtually every record you see has John born in 1774 to John Sr (1751-1792 ) and his mother is EITHER Jane Porter (John Sr's 1st wife) or Mary McMurry (John Sr's 2nd wife). But from the estate settlement documents of John Sr. (where it names th e 4 sons of his two marriages) it is quite apparent that Johns mother has to be Mary McMurry.
The problem that causes though, is that to be a son of 2nd wife Mary McMurry, John would have to be born AFTER abt 1780 as the last person born by the 1st married to Jane Porter was son George Flack (b.10 Nov 1778).
If you accept this point and change John's birth date to abt.1781 you then find that Johns 1st few children were born too early to be realistic eg Elizabeth (born 1796 - when he was 15?) and Abner (born 1797 when he was 16?) - HIGHLY unlikely re ally!!
I have just been re-reading some reference material and I am now convinced that John Flack (with Sarah Milligan) IS NOT the son of John Flack / Mary McMurry but is the son of Michael Flack (of Iredell County) who can be see in Iredell County i n at least the 1800/1810/1820 Census - see book extract below.

J Timothy Cole writes -
"........ But I cannot resist noting that my examination ( *while examining the settlement of the Estate of John Flack {1751-1792} *) of the records of the second generation has led me to an important correction to Flack Genealogy.
It has been the contention of a number of researchers (perhaps traceable to Dr Robertson) that John Flack Jr, the son of John Flack by his second wife Mary, left Rutherford and settled in Perry County ca. 1800. I can say in near certainty that J ohn Flack of Perry County, Illinois, was not the son of John Flack of Rutherford. The John Flack that went to Illinois from Iredell County was the son of Michael Flack.
John and Michael Flack were among the early settlers of the Stony Point area, located near the present day Alexander County-Iredell County line, and where they owned tracts adjacent to a Fergus Milligan. The wife of John Flack was Sarah Milligan .
The parentage of John Flack is established by a land claim made by him in 1792. In that year he entered land in Iredell County; however the land had still not been surveyed some seven years later and in December 1799, he assigned the claim to hi s father. On the back of a warrant for this survey can be found the following:
{{ I John Flack do by these present assign over to my father Michael Flack all my title and claim to the within warrant for the value received. Witness my hand and seal the 5th of December 1799 - John Flack seal / Test Wm. Sharp.}} ...... "

NOTES: Dr. Robertson writes in his book:
"They (I assume John and Sarah) moved to Perry County, IL. They left there and came to Galena in 1830 (Had a disagreement with his brother-in-law, Fergus Milligan). They had 7 children.
1. Elizabeth born 13 May 1796 NC. Married Archibald Steele 24 Oct 1813. d Mar 1874.
2. Abner born 1797 NC. Married Brown. d 12 April 1842
3. James D. b 17 July 1799 NC. Married Susan Strock 1832.
James d 25 Feb 1882
Susan d 1 Mar 1883
buried in Raymond Bleakley farm.
4. John B. d 21 Oct 1842 in Galena
Pauline d 8 Nov 1848
5. Milton
6. George Washington
7. Sarah, died young. "

IN MY OPINION - Dr Robertson gets the above correct - but note that:-
(1) He never says who he thinks Johns mother was (Jane Porter or Mary McMurray)
(2) The Milligan family (see the early census records) lived in Iredell County too (not Rutherford)
(3) I believe Dr Roberstsons only mistake was latching onto the wrong Flack (John Sr instead of Michael) as John's father.
NOTES: In the book "Flack Family Heritage" written in 1975 by Ivarea Flack, she writes that John Flack Jr ( see below) was a child of John Flack Sr and Mary McMurray:-
John Flack Jr. Born 1781 Died 1842 He went to Devisee County, IL and married Penina Young. John was the second white settler in Perry County, IL. They had 4 children:-
(1) James D. Flack married Susan Davis
(2) Elizabeth Flack married Archibald Steele
(3) John Flack, III married Sarah Milligan
(4) George Andrew Flack married Matilda Daniels
Above extract copied to me by Dianne Nanney -1 Aug 2009.

IN MY OPINION - Ivarea Flack gets a number of the names right - but mixes a lot of them up in the wrong order.
(a) Ivarea did conclude the same birth date as me for John Jr (1781 not 1774)
(b) 'A' John Flack did marry a 'Penina' - but it turns out to be John Jr's son who married Penina(h) (Pauline) Hickman - not John.
(c) John Flack (and Sarah Milligan) were the parents of John (and Peninah) not the other way round as Ivarea has it.
(d) James D Flack (and Susan) was John 's (peninah's) brother (not his father
(e) George I still have to work out !
My Conclusion on Ivarea's material on this section of her research is therefore, that it is generally unreliable as she currently has it set out - and it needs a lot of 'interpretation' to seperate the fact from the fiction.

BIOGRAPHY: First settlers of Pinckneyville Precinct
First settlers: If we are to receive the tradition from father to son, Pinckneyville precinct was the first settled portion of the county. In 1799, John Flack came with his family and settled in Four Mile Prairie. When he settled there, he foun d only one other white family living in the county and their name was Cox. From whence and when Cox came to our county, or what became of him after having clothed himself with the honor of being the first settler of our county we know not. We on ly know from our traditions that Flack found Cox here in 1799, and that Cox disappeared as far as the history of our county is concerned.
The original John Flack left a son John, who was born in 1803, and whom our first settlers found living in Four Mile Prairie when they first came to the precinct.
