  • Notes
    • A 8-9 year gap in surviving children in the early 1900s is very characteristic of Syphilis. The mother with syphilis (often caught from the father!) will typically go through a period of infertility, then have children either still born or dying within hours, days or progressively months. Eventually the disease will attenuate to the point where the children will be born alive and survive infancy, often then living many years albeit with syphilis related deformaties (such as blindness) in some cases.

With Frederick and Martha having no children for the first six years of their marriage, then to have 3 born alive who died within the first few days or months, makes me think we seeing evidence of syphilis in this family. [Denise Carr 6 Sep 2009]

"We shouldn5t be too surprised by this, says Dr Peter Greenhouse, an expert in sexual health. A century ago, 10 per cent of the population had syphilis, so a huge percentage of people tracing their family tree can expect to encounter the disease" - Source: "Who Do You Think You Are? http://www.bbcwhodoyouthinkyouaremagazine.com/episode/martin-freeman Sep 2009.
