Laura S. Roberts, a lifelong resident of Bucks County, passed away peacefully Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, at her residence. She was 100.
She was the wife of S. Calvin Roberts, who passed away in 1979.
Born in Plumstead Township, she was the daughter of the late Charles Thomas and Amanda Berger Selner.
Mrs. Roberts was a graduate of Doylestown High School, Class of 1926. She immediately was employed by Webster S. Achey and worked there for 12 years. For the next 10 years, she did substitute work for Achey and Power, the Honorable Hiram H. Keller and Bucks County Law Reporter. Mrs. Roberts then took a job with William L. Goldman and worked there until her retirement.
She was a member of Doylestown Presbyterian Church for 89 years, joining in 1920 at the age of 12. There she helped organize the Samaritan Class in 1928. She also participated in a series of minstrel shows, with the funds going to the class and the church, until 1944. Mrs. Roberts was ordained as an elder in 1973 and served as Clerk of Session in 1989. She also was a member of the choir for more than 40 years and helped organize Young at Heart, a church organization.
Laura was a lifetime member of the Village Improvement Association, the Ladies Auxiliary of Doylestown Fire Co. 1, and was awarded a certificate of appreciation for 25 years of community service from the Pennsylvania Department of Community Affairs in 1981.
Surviving are a son, Perry Roberts and a daughter, Suzanne Roberts, both of Doylestown; three grandchildren, Laura Strauss, her husband, Joseph, of Birdsboro, Peter D. Whitticar, his friend, Jessi Klein, of North Carolina, Sergeant 1st Class David A. Whitticar, his wife, Judy, of Fort Campbell, Tenn., and six great-grandchildren, Aaron, Lindsay, Christopher, Joey, Savannah and Samuel.
Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, at Reed and Steinbach Funeral Home, 2335 Lower State Road, Doylestown. A graveside service will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
