=====================================
The hearing was resumed at the Guildhall London Police Court to-day of the case in which a cinematograph film was said to have been taken of an alleged theft. Three men, named Henry Charles Frank Newman (51), George Frederick Haynes (29) and Frank Hume (30) were charged with stealing on July 21st at 18 Kings Street, Smithfield, four sides of bacon valued at £8, belonging to Messrs George Bowles, Nicholls & Co. Two other men, Edward Randall 959) and Henry James Flack (39) were charged with being concerned with the other accused in stealing between April 1 and July 22 certain bales of bacon valued at £40.
At the last hearing Mr Edmond O'Connor, prosecuting, mentioned that Messrs Bowles and Nicholls had been missing large quantities of bacon over good period, and they employed the services of ex-Detective Inspector Leach of Scotland Yard. Observation was kept on the premises and persons, during the course of which Newman was seen to take bales of bacon out on a barrow with Randall's benediction. Randall was employed there as a foreman. Mr O'Connor said he would have to prefer charges of conspiracy against the defendents. "For the first time in the history of the courts", he added, "I shall be able to produce a cinematograph film of Newman actually stealing his master's goods."
The sentences: Randall and Flack were discharged. Newman was sentenced to three months' imprisonment in the second division and Haynes and Hume were sentenced to three months' hard labour on each of the three charges, the sentences to run consecutively. - GRO Birth Index JAS 1904 Southwark mother's maiden name Pearce.
