George W. Flack, 82, late private of Co D 6th Regt New York Volunteer Infantry, died at his home in Hermon on Wednesday morning after a brief illness. He was a well known figure on the street, where he was seen almost daily until a few days ago, and his genial smile and pleasant greeting will be missed by many. Some 10 days ago he was taken ill and did not go out again, although he was up and around the house until the evening of Tuesday, when he began to fail.
Mr. Flack was born at Heuvelton February 18, 1843. At the age of 17 on September 12, 1861, he enlisted at Ogdensburg and was mustered into the service October 30, going into Co D 60th Regt, New York Volunteer Infantry to serve for three years, and his regiment left the state for the seat of war November 4. His regiment served at different times with the 12th and 20th Corps and he participated int he Battles of Antietam Sept '62; Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Chattanooga in '63; Dallas Ga, Kinesaw Mountain, Peach Tree Creek and Atlanta Ga in '64. Mr. Flack was with his regiment in these battles in which it participated and was color bearer of the regiment for 18 months. He was honorably discharged October 29, 1864 at Atlanta, Ga.
Mr. Flack married at Hermon May 4, 1965, Kate Earle of Edwards and from that time he made his home in Edwards until about 16 years ago he moved to Hermon where he had since resided. Mrs. Flack died in 1920.
Mr. Flack is survived by four children, two sons, L.E. Flack of Gouverneur, H.E. Flack of Potsdam, and two daughters, Mrs. Shirley Booth and Mrs. J. A. Lechich, both of Hermon, with whom he resided, one sister who resides in San Diego California and one brother who resides in Oakland California.
The funeral was held at the home Friday afternoon.
