- BIOGRAPHY: ** J P FLACK HAS LIVED 100 YEARS **
(Newspaper article by Bill Anderson)
He still has a twinkle in his eyes, as a devlish boy, when he recalls and relates a childhood story.
He still cuts stovewood for the two stoves in his house, although he now uses an electric saw.
Remarkable, you bet it is, for the man James Polk Flack, of near Maxey, will be 100 years old on Saturday 9th December 1972.
Also remarkable is his wife, age 90, who still does the cooking, dish washing and churning.
Tuesday while visiting with the Flacks this writer saw milk, ready for churning for the first time since his boyhood farm days, when milking was one of his chores.
During his boyhood days, Mr Flack attended school at the Halls School which was located in the Maxey Community.
While still a teenager, he went to work with an uncle down in Texas. he said "one fall, while I was in Texas, I picked 30,000 pounds of cotton, and a lot of people today won't believe that."
On 7th January 1900 he was married to the former Miss Dove Dunn, a native of near Kenton.
After their marriage in Lake County the new bride and groom returned to the Church Grove community and lived for about six months with his father, John Flack.
They moved to Lake County where he worked in farming and at a blacksmith shop for a few years.
He tells of a man asking him if he would try his three girls at picking cotton at $1.00 per day. He said "the next morning those girls came over and in eight days we had chopped 100 acres". They'd tell me "we'll eat anything you find growing except cotton after we do our chopping." They were that good, too. That Fall, nine of us picked that 100 acres pretty fast."
Along about 1904 he borrowed $1500 to buy his present farm, which had a log house on it. "I had a good and helpful wife and two good mules, so we made it pretty good." he said.
For many years (about 65) Mr Flack was known for the good quality broom corn he raised. In fact, this publisher used to take a broom from Mr Flack in exchange for a years subscription to the Tennessean. He once told of coming to town with his Dad in 1888 to subscribe to the new Newspaper.
I asked him several years ago if he'd ever been sick and he replied, "when I was in Texas I got real sick with Typhoid fever. I had an old Indian Doctor and he finally told me,"J.P, you may get well, but you won't ever look like much", and I dont reckon I've really been sick since then."
After visiting in his home with the Flacks for a while, he and I strolled down to his workshop. This was quite an experience when I saw a large shed stocked high with stovewood he has cut. It was hard to believe J.P Flack would be 100 years old on Saturday.
As we started back to the house, and looked at some of the chickens he feeds each day, he loosened up and started telling me stories of his boyhood days.
Words cannot describe the feeling I has as I heard this century-old man tell of mischevious experiences of his childhood days. he laughed and his eyes sparkled as though, at heart, he still has a little streak of childish devilment in him. The hardest part of the interview was having to leave too soon because of another appointment to take some pictures.
A daughter, Miss Hattie Elizabeth Flack has always made her home with her parents, and we're sure she is much help and comfort to them.
During their 72 years of Marriage, they have outlived two children. JY, a son, died at age 54 and Ruby, who died when only 2 years old.
Their other children are Floyd Flack of Reeves, Mrs Ray Powell of Vernon, Mrs Jerry Combs of Templeton, Mrs Louise Worley of Dyersburg and Mrs Louis King of Dyer.
On Sunday from 1.00pm to 4.00pm, his children will honor him with an Open House at his home, near Maxey.
Friends and relatives are invited.
Yes, Mr Flack said he has "Lived close to the Lord" and after visiting in his home, you believe him.
