- John Blackman
John BLACKMAN, the third child of James Blackman and Elizabeth HARLEY was born 1795 in Woolwich Kent. He arrived 14th December 1801 in the'Canada'. He was a farmer and a publican. He died 21st November 1860 atNugal Station and is buried at Rosedale Lithgow (Mt Clarence). On 1stNovember 1824 at Christ Church CofE in Castlereagh, he married Elizabeth MORRIS. There was no issue from this couple.
John and James Blackman Junior were two of the 10 settlers sent by Governor Macquarie to settle the Bathurst area. In the same year John accompanied John Oxley on his exploration along the Macquarie River. In1821 he is listed as a Chief Constable of Bathurst. In 1823 he guided Capt Percy Simpson to Wellington NSW where a settlement was to be established. The site of Orange was first called Blackman Swamp after John Blackman.
John Blackman established "Rosedale" Farm, Lithgow and had "The Australia Arms" Inn built at Bowenfels in 1850-58. This building now known as"Fernhill". John Blackman also owned "Nugal" Station on the Castlereagh River north of Coonamble NSW.
When John Blackman died in 1860 he left most of his considerable assets to his nephews James Peacock - son of his wife's sister (Sophia Morris who on 28/6/1830 married George Peacock) and Richard Merrick - son of his sister Henrietta Blackman who on 26/12/1823 married William Merrick. A third nephew mentioned in John Blackman's will was "John Blackman - son of my brother James Blackman" - this must be the adopted son of James.
From 'Blackman's Base Camp' by Val Walsh - John was buried at Nugal but he was later re-interred at his "Rosedale Farm" at Blackman's Gap. The road was known as the Bridal Track at Blackman's Gap. After the road was formed the name was changed from Blackman's Gap to Brown's Gap. Later,the Lithgow City Council changed the name of the Gap to Hartley Valley Road
